Euro 2012: Greece said yes to the euro – now we'll fight for the Euros

In a country spiritually and economically shattered by the imposed austerity, beating the tournament's strongest team Germany in the quarter-finals will provide it with new pride

The Greeks were happy last Saturday and it was due to their national football team and the efforts of Georgios Samaras against the Russian defence. The next day there was another Samaras, namely Antonis Samaras, the leader of New Democracy, who made the Germans, among other European countries, quite happy by winning the Greek general election by a marginal 2.5%, a victory that resulted in a "yes" on the "yes or no to the euro" pseudo-dilemma.
But there never really was a dilemma. Greeks want to stay in the euro and they will fight for their right to be in it. Despite the "lazy and corrupt" stereotypes that are attached to them lately, there is a young, well-educated generation who are working hard and are not afraid of bruises while working their way through austerity and reform.
This is the mentality of the Greek national team and their players. They don't have the talent of the Dutch, they don't possess the flair of the Spaniards, they didn't inherit the footballing culture of the Italians, they don't even have the automated style of play of the Germans. But they have a fighting spirit and refuse to give up without giving their all.
"We are a fighting team. When we are together, no one can stop us," said the man of the match against Russia, the team captain and Euro 2004 champion Giorgos Karagounis.

Former US, Greece coach Panagoulias dies

Alketas "Alkis" Panagoulias, who coached his native Greece to the World Cup finals in 1994 and led the US team from 1983-85, died Monday in Virginia, USA Soccer confirmed on Tuesday.
Panagoulias, who was 78, also coached the United States' 1984 Olympic team, which beat Costa Rica 3-0 in their opening match on July 29 at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, California.
He managed Greece from 1992-1994, guiding them to a first FIFA World Cup appearance.
Panagoulias also coached Greece to their first major international tournament, the 1980 European Championship in Italy.
A funeral for Panagoulias will be held on Friday, June 22, at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church in Falls Church, Virginia.
Hellenic Football Federation President Sofoklis Pilavios told UEFA.com that Panagoulias's death was "a big loss."

Roberto Benigni: “Europe Owes Greece Everything”

Roberto Benigni visited Thessaloniki. For what reason, you ask? In a crowded room, in front of thrilled people, the Italian actor was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the Department of Italian Language and Literature.
Benigni is a famous actor and director, and Oscar winner, who has starred in many successful movies. Rumor has it that he is a very enthusiastic person, and it proved to be true as he jumped on the benches to celebrate his academic title. Dressed in a gown, he flapped his cap smiling widely.
“It is, indeed, a very important moment for our University,” commented the rector of the Aristotle University, Yannis Mylopoulos. He added that this conferment offers “spiritual wealth” to the University.

Euro 2012 Germany - Greece 22/06/2012

It's about football! Eurozone strugglers Greece ignore financial gloom ahead of Germany quarter-final

It's about football! Greece hope to beat eurozone benefactors Germany on Friday

Greece's Euro 2012 squad spent more time watching election results on Sunday than they did watching quarter-final opponents Germany defeat Denmark 2-1.
The Greeks were shock qualifiers ahead of Russia and Poland in Group A, and are to face an imperious German side on Friday in Gdansk.
The clash pits the eurozone's biggest strugglers against its wealthy pay-masters, but the Greeks believe the economic climate will not have any bearing on proceedings.
'No, this will not have an impact, its football we're talking about, its sport,' midfielder Giannis Maniatis said.
'The most important thing for us is to give some happiness to the Greek people, that's all, to make them celebrate in the street, given everything that is going on.'

OUT OF THIS WORLD: 'MARTIAN PINK' DIAMOND SOLD FOR US$17.4M AT CHRISTIE'S

The "Martian Pink" diamond by Harry Winston fetched a staggering US$17.4 million at auction in Hong Kong this week as it went on sale for the first time in 36 years, more than double the estimated price.

Billed as the largest pink diamond ever to go under the hammer, the stunning round fancy intense pink gem was the pièce de résistance of the Christies' jewellery auction that raised $80 million on Tuesday.

"Having appeared on the market for the first time in 36 years, The Martian Pink sold by Harry Winston in 1976 created a sensation during its worldwide exhibition tour and achieved US$17.4m after a 10-minute bidding war," said Vickie Sek of Christie's Asia.

Hong Kong has emerged as the world's third biggest auction centre after New York and London, thanks largely to the growing luxury market in mainland China

Peter Carl Faberge

The Faberge family originated in France, but the Protestant family fled after the Edict of Nantes was revoked in 1685. Eventually, some family members settled in Russia. Peter Carl Faberge was born in 1846. His education and goldsmith apprenticeship were in Germany. After establishing himself independently in 1866, Carl continued to refine his skills. By age 24, Faberge had inherited his father's jewelry workshop in St. Petersburg, Russia. For ten years as head of the business, Carl continued to produce goods similar to other jewelry makers. He also volunteered his time to the Hermitage, a treasury which stored all of the precious objects of the Russian czars, including gold artifacts and ancient treasures. All of these pieces Carl helped catalog, appraise and repair. He reorganized the business with the help of his able brother Agathon and forever changed the face of jewelry and art.In 1882 Carl's younger brother Agathon, a trained jeweler full of ideas, appeared on the scene.

International Campaign for the protection of Greek cultural heritage Association of Greek Archaeologists

The International Appeal’s press conference was met with great interest from international media in Athens today. Among others the event was attended by The Associated Press, Thomson Reuters, Radio France, the Chinese agency CCTV International, RIA Novosti, the German public channel ARD, the Athens News Agency, Anadolu Ajansi, as well as many European newspapers and other radio stations.
The president of the Association of Greek Archaeologists, Despina Koutsoumba, the Secretary George Riginos and the member of the board Amalia Tsitouri addressed the journalists and raised issues regarding problems occurring from budget cuts predicted in the austerity plan of the Greek government.
Foreign journalists have been particularly interested in how the limited funding could influence the adequate protection of antiquities and maintenance of the research projects. The members of the Association responded that these cuts “are indefensible even on a strictly practical economic level, considering that the government devotes less than 1% of the National Budget to the Ministry of Culture. The protection of Museums and antiquities are Greece’s social wealth as well as a national income producing resource”.
The Association questioned the policies implemented by the Ministry of Culture and asked from the Ministered to reconsider his position regarding the funding and the stuff reduction of the archaeological service.
Hundreds of people have expressed their support for our campaign, including archaeologists from other countries, politicians as well as admirers of the Greek antiquities.
